Olivetheboy’s career experiences a remarkable advancement as he officially joins Columbia Records under Sony

Ghanaian Afrobeats singer Olivetheboy has secured a lucrative new contract with Sony’s Columbia Records, facilitated by its subsidiary Bu Vision Ent. This noteworthy achievement places him among a distinguished roster of African icons who have previously partnered with Sony Music, such as D’Banj, Davido, Wizkid, and the esteemed legend Angelique Kidjo.

Under the leadership of Bu Thiam, the founder of Bu Vision and Columbia’s Executive Vice President, in conjunction with Olivetheboy’s management at Loop Music/FulLCircL Management Ltd, this significant collaboration was formalized over the past weekend. The official announcement of this monumental partnership is scheduled to occur on Friday, August 24, 2023, during an exclusive unveiling event dedicated to the rising star.

Olivetheboy initially captured the attention of Sony/Columbia Records through Bu Vision in May 2023, following the release of his globally acclaimed single, “Goodsin.” This track garnered the distinction of being the most streamed Ghanaian single in 2023, propelling the talented artist to the title of Ghana’s hottest artist of the year so far, according to a midyear report from Chartmetrics.

During June, Columbia EVP Bu Thiam personally traveled to Ghana, culminating in the sealing of this transformative deal last weekend after three months of negotiations. As part of the arrangement, Bu Vision will oversee Olivetheboy’s A&R responsibilities, while Sony/Columbia Records will manage all aspects related to licensing, promotion, and distribution of his creative works.

Notably, the partnership suggests that Loop Music/FulLCircL Management Ltd is likely to retain ownership of Olivetheboy’s recordings, consistent with their existing practices. Olivetheboy’s contract with Sony/Columbia, the world’s second-largest major music label, is undeniably groundbreaking. This move marks only the second instance in which the label has ventured into the Ghanaian market, the first being the signing of Gyakie in 2021.

Beyond establishing Olivetheboy as one of Africa’s preeminent talents, this accomplishment further propels Ghana’s rapid ascent on the global music stage.
