Morgan Heritage, the illustrious three-time GRAMMY award-winning band, has graced us with the latest single “Bambulele” and divulged the entire tracklisting for their highly anticipated album, “The Homeland,” scheduled to release on April 21st.
“Bambulele” was birthed from the harrowing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) crisis in South Africa, the Soweto Uprising of 1976, and the tragic passing of 12-year-old Hector Pieterson. The protest was against the imposition of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools, which was primarily spoken by the white population, as opposed to their mother tongues. The authorities’ cruel response resulted in the death of young Pieterson, triggering widespread bereavement.
The song “Bambulele” is a traditional Mbube elegy that Morgan Heritage perceives as a clarion call for Africans, both on the continent and overseas, to unite and safeguard Mama Africa. It is the opening track of “The Homeland,” featuring the Brothers & Sisters Art Organization, a youth choir based in Cape Town. The ensemble’s performance elevates the song to a mystical, ancestral level, invoking a soulfulness that the audience may not have realized they possessed.
“The Homeland” is an opus comprising 21 tracks that traverse the Caribbean to the African continent and beyond, epitomizing the group’s global expansion. The album is graced with contributions from a plethora of stars such as Popcaan, Youssou N’Dour, Shaggy, Beenie Man, Shatta Wale, Mádé Kuti, and more. The Morgan brothers regard this album as a rebirth project that builds upon a storied legacy that has endured for decades and will continue to inspire for years to come.
Morgan Heritage’s leading single, “Who Deh Like U” featuring Bounty Killer, Cham & Stonebwoy, captivated listeners with its upbeat rhythm, topping the US iTunes Afro-Beat chart. The group has embarked on a global promotional tour that includes Los Angeles, New York, England, Germany, France, Uganda, and Ghana. They recently graced The Drop Series, hosted by the GRAMMY Museum (at L.A. Live), where they expounded on their career, creative process, and their forthcoming album.
